DRIVER CHARGED FOR MORE THAN DOUBLE THE SPEED LIMIT

(ASPHODEL-NORWOOD TOWNSHIP, ON) - A member of the Peterborough Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has charged an individual with Stunt after stopping them for travelling over double the posted speed limit.
On June 5, 2026, shortly after 6:30pm, a Peterborough County OPP officer was conducting patrol on Highway 7 in Asphodel-Norwood Township when they observed a vehicle travelling well above the posted speed limit. The officer activated their Radar as the vehicle was passing in the opposite direction and obtained speed reading of 166 km/hr in the posted 80 km/hr speed limit.
The officer made a turn and conducted a traffic stop. The driver, a 21-year-old from Toronto on their way to a friend’s cottage, was charged with Drive Motor Vehicle - Perform Stunt-Excessive Speed under section 172(1) of the Highway Traffic Act. The driver had their licence suspended for 30 days, their vehicle impounded for 14-days, and was provided a date to appear in court.
Speed Enforcement is about safety and getting drivers to slow down. Reduced speeds translates to reduced collisions which means fewer deaths and injuries on our roads. Drivers can avoid being issued a provincial offence notice for speeding by simply driving within the posted speed limit.
