CHARGES LAID AFTER WANTED PERSON LOCATED IN TRUNK

(Atikokan, ON) - Two people were charged criminally after a wanted person was located hiding in the trunk of a vehicle.
On June 3, 2026, at approximately 9:30 am, an officer with the Atikokan Detachment Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) stopped a vehicle on MacKenzie Ave for a registration violation. The officer determined that the driver was using a plate that belonged to a different vehicle and arrested the driver for the offence. Search incident to arrest discovered a small quantity of a controlled substance. The search incident to arrest expanded and a person with warrants out of both Thunder Bay and Rainy River Districts was located hiding in the trunk of the vehicle.
Margaret JARVIS, 36-years-old from Thunder Bay is charged with the following offences:
- Possession of a Schedule I substance (cocaine)
- Drive motor vehicle perform stunt
- Use plate not authorized for vehicle
- Fail to surrender permit for motor vehicle
- Drive motor vehicle with no currently validated permit
Kyle BATES, 37-years-old from Atikokan is charged with the following offences:
- Possession of a Schedule I substance (cocaine)
- Fail to attend court after having appeared
- Passenger fail to occupy position with seat belt
The first accused was released by police and is scheduled to appear in the Atikokan Ontario Court of Justice on October 29, 2026, to speak to the charges. The vehicle was also impounded for 14 days.
The second accused was held in custody and has a bail hearing in the Fort Frances Ontario Court of Justice on June 5, 2026.
