TWO DRIVERS FACE CHARGES AFTER TRYING TO AVOID RIDE CHECKS

(SHUNIAH, ON) - Two drivers are facing impaired driving-related charges after attempting to avoid separate Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) checks.
On Friday, July 10, 2026, members of the Thunder Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting a RIDE check at Lakeshore Drive and Spruce River Road in Shuniah. At approximately 11:15 pm, officers observed a vehicle approach the checkpoint before failing to stop. The vehicle was stopped a short distance away, where officers determined the driver was impaired.
As a result, Bradley MCKAY, 43, of Thunder Bay, was arrested and charged with:
- Operation while impaired
- Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Thunder Bay on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.
On Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at approximately 9:30 pm, Thunder Bay OPP officers were conducting a RIDE check at Highway 587 and Pass Lake Road when they observed a vehicle attempting to avoid the checkpoint. The vehicle was stopped nearby, where officers observed signs of alcohol consumption and located open liquor inside the vehicle. The driver subsequently refused to provide a breath sample.
As a result, Erik HANSEN, 72, of Pass Lake, was arrested and charged with:
- Driving motor vehicle with open container of liquor
- Failure or refusal to comply with demand
- Operation while prohibited
The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Thunder Bay on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.
