To reduce the risk of fire, cottage owners and visitors are reminded to follow these preventive measures:

  • Fire Safety Equipment - Ensure smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are installed, tested, and working properly
  • Heating Appliance Safety - If using wood stoves or sauna heaters, confirm they are clean, well‑maintained, and operating safely. Make sure vents and chimneys are clear and avoid leaving them running unattended
  • Clear Combustibles - Keep flammable materials away from stoves, heaters, and open flames
  • Water Pumps and Fire Extinguishers - Check that water pumps, hoses, and fire extinguishers are accessible and in good working condition, as response times may be longer on island properties
  • Ash Disposal - Dispose of ashes in a metal container with a lid and store it outside, away from buildings
  • General Maintenance - Have chimneys, vents, and heating appliances inspected regularly by qualified technicians

Kenora OPP encourage all cottage owners and visitors to practice responsible fire safety as the summer season begins. Anyone with concerns about fire hazards or unsafe activity is urged to contact the Kenora OPP detachment.
