DIRT BIKE USE ON ROADWAYS - KNOW THE RULES
Dirt bikes with blue-lettered licence plates are considered road-approved motorcycles and must meet all Highway Traffic Act requirements, including valid registration, insurance, an appropriate driver’s licence, and compliance with the rules of the road.
Dirt bikes with green-lettered licence plates are classified as off-road motorcycles, a type of off-road vehicle (ORV) under Ontario Regulation 316/03. Riders should check with their local municipality before operating on public roads, as municipal bylaws vary and may permit or restrict their use.
To operate a green-plated off-road motorcycle where permitted, riders must:
- Be at least 16 years of age
- Hold a valid M2, M, G2, or G driver’s licence
- Carry valid insurance
- Wear an approved motorcycle helmet
- Ensure the vehicle is properly registered and plated
Unplated dirt bikes may only be operated on private property with the property owner’s permission.
The OPP also reminds riders that a valid trail permit is required when using the Algonquin Trail and other trail systems where permits are required.
Before riding, operators should familiarize themselves with all applicable provincial legislation and municipal bylaws. Riders are encouraged to respect their communities, stay on authorized routes and trails, and operate safely at all times.
The OPP will continue to conduct enforcement initiatives to promote public safety. Failure to comply with applicable laws may result in fines, vehicle impoundment, or other enforcement action.
