UOV OPP ARREST DRIVER AFTER FAILING TO STOP

(WHITEWATER REGION TWP., ON) - The Upper Ottawa Valley (UOV) detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has arrested an individual after failing to stop for police on Highway 17.
On June 27, 2026, shortly after 2:30 pm, a traffic complaint was received about a possible impaired driver on Highway 17 in Whitewater Region Twp. Officers were able to locate the vehicle and attempt to stop it a short time later. The vehicle initially stopped then fled the scene at a high rate of speed. Police did not pursue the vehicle for public safety but began an immediate investigation into identifying the driver.
The vehicle was located on Highway 17 in Head Clara Maria Twp., later in the afternoon. Alternative measures were attempted to render the vehicle undriveable. The vehicle again fled the scene. OPP followed the vehicle from a safe distance to ensure the safety of the other motorists travelling on the roadway.
Mattawa OPP assisted in the apprehension of the driver once officers were in a safe area to assist the vehicle to come to a stop and prevent it from fleeing again. The driver and lone occupant was arrested and transported to a local hospital as a precaution.
Kody ETHIER, 34 years old, from Blind River was charged with flight from police officer, dangerous operation and fail to comply with probation order.
The accused was held for a bail hearing on June 28, 2026 They were later released with their next court date scheduled at the Ontario Court of Justice on July 10, 2026.
