(PEMBROKE, ON) - The Upper Ottawa Valley (UOV) detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) wants to remind all travellers to take care and arrive safely during this unofficial start to summer.

June 26, 2026, kicks off the Ontario wide safety initiative focussing on distracted driving as well as boater safety. UOV OPP members will be out in full force on the roadways and waterways to ensure everyone is travelling in a safe manner. The initiative runs until July 5, 2026

In 2026, there has been a significant increase in fatal collisions across the province. This year, there has been a 67 percent increase of fatalities related to lack of restraint use (seatbelt). There has also been one fatality each related to no helmet or personal floatation device (PFD).

Officers will be focusing on ensuring people using our roadways, waterways and trails are making full use of lifesaving equipment and keeping themselves safe through other positive behaviours. Officers will also be targeting inattentive drivers, aggressive drivers and impaired drivers.
