If you are operating a e-bike it is important to remember that to legally operate an e-bike (power-assisted bicycle), the bike must:
- Have operable pedals
- Have an electric motor rated at 500 watts or less
- Have a maximum assisted speed of 32 km/h
- Weigh no more than 120 kg (including battery)
- Have two independent braking systems
- Battery and electric motor securely fastened to the bicycle frame to prevent them from moving while the e-bike is operating
- All electrical terminals properly insulated
- Meet Ontario equipment requirements
As a rider, you must:
- Be at least 16 years old
- Wear an approved bicycle or motorcycle helmet
- Follow the same traffic laws that apply to cyclists
- Not ride on controlled-access highways such as Highway 3
You do not need:
- A driver’s licence
- Vehicle registration
- Licence plates
- Insurance
