TRAFFIC STOP RESULTS IN LARGE CONTRABAND TOBACCO SEIZURE

(BRANT, ON) - Two individuals are facing charges after traffic stop investigation resulted in the seizure of a large quantity of contraband tobacco.
On Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at approximately 5:35 pm, a member from the Brant County detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a traffic stop with a vehicle on Wilson Street West, Ancaster.
As a result of the investigation approximately 2,000,000 unmarked cigarettes were seized, and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
The 36-year-old driver, Stephen BURROWS of Phelpston, has been charged with the following offences:
- Trafficking in Contraband Tobacco
- Possess unmarked cigarettes for sale
- Possess unmarked cigarettes
- Drive motor vehicle, no permit
- Use plate not authorized for vehicle
- Operate vehicle - fail to display inspection sticker or proof (two counts)
- Disobey stop sign - fail to stop
The accused, Stephen BURROWS, is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Hamilton on September 25, 2026.
Additionally, a 57-year-old individual from Bala, has also been charged with:
- Permit use of plate not authorized for vehicle
