OPP CHARGE WEST NIPISSING RESIDENT WITH FRAUD FROM A LOCAL BUSINESS

(WEST NIPISSING, ON) - One person has been charged following a complex fraud investigation conducted by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).
On February 4, 2026, members of the Nipissing West Detachment of the OPP, with assistance from the Nipissing West Crime Unit, initiated a complex financial investigation into allegations of fraud involving a local construction business operating in West Nipissing.
The investigation revealed the business was involved in the diversion of funds, resulting in significant financial losses to clients, subcontractors, suppliers, and creditors. The alleged activity also had broader economic impacts within the local community and is consistent with what is commonly referred to as a “phoenix-style” fraud scheme, where a business accumulates debt and financial obligations before ceasing operations and re-emerging under a new structure.
As a result of the investigation, Jason GAGNON, 45 years old, of West Nipissing, has been charged with:
- Fraud Over $5,000 - three counts
- Fraudulent Concealment
- Theft by Person Required to Account
The accused was released and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay on September 3, 2026.
