DRIVER CHARGED FOLLOWING TRAFFIC STOP

Vehicle Impounded, Licence Suspended

(WELLINGTON NORTH TOWNSHIP, ON) - A Melanchthon driver is facing charges following a traffic stop in Wellington North.

On July 16, 2026, at approximately 10:30 pm, a member of the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was conducting proactive traffic enforcement on Wellington Road 109 in Wellington North Township, when they initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed.

The officer detected signs of impairment and demanded the driver provide a sample of their breath into an Approved Screening Device (ASD), which registered a warn range “alert”. As a result, the driver received a 7-day driver’s licence suspension.

Additionally, the driver, a 47-year-old from Melanchthon, is charged under the Highway Traffic Act with:

  • Drive motor vehicle - perform stunt - excessive speed
  • Speeding 50+km/h over posted speed limit

Anyone charged with ‘Drive Motor Vehicle - Perform Stunt’ receives a 14-day vehicle impoundment and a 30 day driver’s licence suspension as per statute.

The accused is scheduled to appear in the Provincial Offences Court - Guelph, at a later date.
